Imsouane in Winter: Big Swells, Mild Sun and a Quieter Village

When Europe turns grey, Imsouane enters its prime: big swells, mild sunny days and a quieter village. Discover the winter weather, water temperatures, surf conditions, things to do and what to pack for a winter escape.

When Europe turns grey and cold, Imsouane enters its prime. Winter brings the biggest, most consistent swells of the year to this small fishing village, along with clear blue skies and a quieter, more local atmosphere. If you are wondering whether a winter trip to Imsouane is worth it, here is everything you need to know.

What is the weather like in winter?

From December to February, days in Imsouane are typically mild and sunny, often around 18–22°C in the afternoon. Nights are much cooler, and it can feel chilly after sunset, so pack warm layers. Rain is possible but usually comes in short spells rather than long grey weeks. Most days you will be eating lunch outside on a terrace.

Water temperature

The sea is at its coolest in winter, around 16–18°C. A 4/3 mm full wetsuit is the standard choice; read our wetsuit guide for the details month by month.

Winter surf conditions

Winter is the peak of the surf season. Strong North Atlantic storms send long-period swells down to Morocco, and Imsouane’s two main spots come alive:

  • The Bay wraps the swell into a long, peeling right-hander that often stays manageable even on big days, perfect for longboarders and improving surfers.
  • Cathedral Point, on the other side of the village, picks up more swell and becomes a powerful wave for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Beginners can still learn in winter. Instructors pick the smallest, most sheltered corner of the bay and the right tide. On the biggest days, lessons may move or be shortened for safety. New to surfing? Read what to expect from your first week.

Crowds and atmosphere

Outside the Christmas and New Year holidays, winter is calmer than summer in the village itself. You will share the line-up mostly with experienced surfers who come specifically for the swell. Cafés are relaxed, sunsets over the bay are spectacular and the pace of life slows down.

What to do when you’re not surfing

  • Watch the fishing boats come in and buy the catch of the day at the port.
  • Hike the coastal cliffs, which are much more pleasant in cool weather than in summer heat.
  • Take a yoga class to stretch out after long surf sessions.
  • Take a day trip to Paradise Valley, Essaouira or Taghazout. See our day trips from Imsouane.
  • Warm up with a tagine and mint tea. Find our favourite dishes in what to eat in Imsouane.

Holidays to know about

Late December to early January is the busiest winter period, as many European travellers come for the holidays. Read our dedicated guide to Christmas and New Year in Imsouane. Mid-January also has Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year on 14 January, a public holiday in Morocco.

What to pack for winter in Imsouane

  • A 4/3 mm wetsuit (or rent one locally)
  • Warm layers for the evenings: a fleece, a hoodie and a light down jacket
  • Long trousers and closed shoes for evenings and hikes
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses, because the winter sun is still strong
  • A light rain jacket, just in case

Is winter right for you?

Winter is ideal for surfers who want quality waves, travellers escaping cold weather and anyone who prefers a quieter village. If you are a complete beginner looking for warm water and small waves every day, summer may suit you better. Compare the seasons in our best time to visit guide.

Plan your winter escape

Book early for the holiday period, as the best rooms close to the bay fill quickly. Browse our accommodations and surf packages, pick your dates and swap winter grey for Atlantic blue.
