Paradise Valley From Imsouane: A Day Trip to Morocco’s Palm Oasis

Need a rest day from surfing? Paradise Valley, a palm-lined gorge with natural rock pools in the Atlas foothills, is one of the best day trips from the coast. Here’s how to get there from Imsouane, when to go and what to bring.

After a few days of surfing, your shoulders will thank you for a rest day, and there is no better place to spend it than Paradise Valley. Hidden in the Atlas foothills north-east of Agadir, this palm-lined gorge with natural rock pools is one of the most popular day trips from the coast. Here is how to plan it from Imsouane.

What is Paradise Valley?

Paradise Valley is a section of the Tamraght river valley in the High Atlas foothills, near the village of Aourir. A road winds through dramatic gorges, past Berber villages and argan trees, to a valley of palm trees where the river forms turquoise pools between the rocks. It is a beautiful place to swim, picnic, hike and relax.

How to get there from Imsouane

From Imsouane, drive south along the coast road towards Taghazout and Aourir, then turn inland into the mountains. Allow around 2 hours each way, depending on traffic and stops. The final part of the route is a winding mountain road, so take your time. Many travellers join an organised day trip or book a private driver through their accommodation, which is the easiest option. You can also combine the trip with a stop in Taghazout; see our surf road trip.

The walk to the pools

From the parking area, a path leads down into the valley. The walk takes around 20–30 minutes and is easy to moderate, with some uneven and rocky sections. Wear sturdy sandals or trainers, not flip-flops. Along the way you will pass small cafés serving mint tea, fresh juice and tagines.

Swimming and the rock pools

The pools are the highlight: clear water, smooth rocks and shady palm trees. Some visitors jump from the rocks into deeper pools. If you do, check the depth first and never jump if you are not sure. The amount of water depends on recent rainfall: the pools are fullest after the winter and spring rains and can be low in late summer or during dry years.

Best time to visit

  • Spring (March to May): the best season, with green landscapes and full pools.
  • Autumn: pleasant temperatures, but the water level can be lower.
  • Summer: hot and busier, especially at weekends.
  • Winter: fresh water, cool mornings, and still beautiful on a sunny day.

Go on a weekday and arrive early to avoid the crowds.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit and quick-dry towel
  • Good walking shoes
  • Sunscreen, hat and water
  • Cash for cafés, parking and guides; see money in Imsouane
  • A bag for your rubbish; please leave nothing behind

Respect the valley

Paradise Valley is home to local communities. Dress modestly when walking through villages, ask before photographing people, and keep music low. Read more in our guide to customs and etiquette.
