Get Surf-Fit: How to Prepare Your Body Before Your Imsouane Trip

You don’t need to be an athlete to surf, but a little preparation means more waves and fewer aches. Here’s a simple four-to-six-week plan to build paddling strength, pop-up power and flexibility before your Imsouane surf trip.

Surfing uses muscles most of us rarely train: shoulders and back for paddling, core and legs for popping up, and plenty of flexibility for everything in between. You don’t need to be super fit to enjoy a surf trip to Imsouane, but a few weeks of preparation will help you surf longer, progress faster and avoid sore, tired days. Here’s how to get ready.

Why surf fitness matters

Most of a surf session is spent paddling, not riding. If your shoulders give up after 30 minutes, you’ll catch fewer waves and learn more slowly. Better fitness also means more energy for a second session, and less risk of strains. Always check with a doctor before starting a new training plan if you have health concerns.

1. Paddling strength (shoulders and back)

  • Swimming: the best surf training there is. Two or three 30-minute freestyle sessions a week work wonders.
  • Resistance band rows and pull-aparts for the upper back.
  • Superman holds: lie on your stomach and lift chest and legs, as on a board.
  • Prone paddling on a bench or gym ball to mimic the movement.

2. Pop-up power (chest, arms and core)

  • Push-ups: start on your knees if needed.
  • Burpees, a great pop-up simulator.
  • Pop-up drills on the floor: lie down, push up and jump your feet into your surf stance, 10–20 times a day.
  • Planks and side planks for a strong, stable core.

3. Legs and balance

  • Squats and lunges for a low, stable stance on the board.
  • Single-leg balance exercises, or a balance board if you have one.
  • Skateboarding or surfskating, which is excellent for weight shifting and turning.

4. Flexibility and mobility

Tight hips and shoulders make popping up harder. Yoga is one of the best complements to surfing: it builds flexibility, balance and breath control. Focus on hip openers, shoulder mobility and gentle back bends like cobra or upward dog, the same position you hold while paddling. Discover yoga in the village in our guide to sports and activities in Imsouane.

A simple 4–6 week plan

  • 2–3 times a week: swimming or paddling-focused workouts.
  • 2 times a week: strength circuit with push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and burpees.
  • Daily, 10 minutes: pop-up drills and stretching.
  • Once a week: a yoga class.

During your trip

  • Warm up on the beach for 5–10 minutes before each session.
  • Stretch after surfing, while your muscles are warm.
  • Hydrate and eat well. Fresh fish and tagines are perfect fuel; see what to eat in Imsouane.
  • Take a rest day in the middle of the week. A day trip to Paradise Valley is ideal.
  • Listen to your body. Soreness is normal; sharp pain is not.

Don’t worry if you haven’t trained

Many guests arrive without any preparation and still have a wonderful time. Instructors adapt sessions to your fitness, and the gentle waves of The Bay are forgiving. A little training simply means more fun in the water. Wondering how fast you’ll progress? Read how long it takes to learn to surf.
