Imsouane for Solo Female Travellers: Tips for a Safe and Happy Trip

Imsouane is one of the most relaxed places in Morocco for women travelling alone. From choosing accommodation and what to wear to meeting other travellers and surfing solo, here are our practical tips for a safe and happy trip.

More and more women travel to Imsouane on their own, to learn to surf, do yoga or simply slow down by the ocean. The village is small, relaxed and used to international visitors, which makes it one of the easier places in Morocco to travel solo as a woman. As anywhere, a little preparation helps. Here are our practical tips.

Is Imsouane a good place for women travelling alone?

Yes. Imsouane is a quiet fishing village rather than a big city, and life revolves around surfing, fishing and cafés. Many solo women stay in surf camps and surf houses, where it’s easy to meet other travellers from day one. Unwanted attention is much less common than in busy medinas, but it isn’t zero, so it helps to know the local customs. Read our general safety guide too.

Choose the right accommodation

  • Surf camps and surf houses are ideal: instant community, organised activities and staff who look out for guests.
  • Read reviews from other women before booking.
  • Stay close to the bay and the village centre so you don’t walk far after dark.

Not sure which style fits you? Read surf camp, surf house or hotel.

What to wear

Morocco is a conservative Muslim country. On the beach and in the water, swimwear and wetsuits are completely normal. In the village, around the port and in shops, cover your shoulders and knees. Loose trousers or a long skirt and a T-shirt or light shirt are perfect. You will feel more comfortable and attract less attention. More in our customs and etiquette guide.

Getting there safely

Book an airport transfer through your accommodation rather than negotiating a taxi on arrival, especially if you land late. Imsouane is about 1.5–2 hours from Agadir airport. See how to get to Imsouane for all the options.

Dealing with unwanted attention

  • A firm, polite “no, thank you” (la, shukran) and walking on is usually enough.
  • Don’t feel obliged to answer personal questions or accept invitations.
  • Wearing sunglasses and walking with purpose helps in busier places.
  • If anyone bothers you, go into a shop, café or your accommodation and ask for help. Locals are generally protective of guests.

Meeting people

Solo travel in Imsouane rarely feels lonely. Join group surf lessons, yoga classes and shared dinners at your surf house, or watch the sunset over the bay with other travellers. Our guide to sports and activities has plenty of ideas.

Practical tips

  • Get a local SIM card so you always have data and maps; see internet in Imsouane.
  • Carry some cash, as ATMs are limited; see money in Imsouane.
  • Share your plans with your accommodation when going on hikes or day trips.
  • Use a torch at night; some streets are poorly lit.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, leave.

Surfing alone as a woman

The line-up at The Bay is friendly, and there are often other women in the water. If you are a beginner, book lessons. Learning with an instructor is safer and quicker. Read what to expect from your first week.

Enjoy the freedom

With its calm rhythm, welcoming people and supportive surf community, Imsouane is a wonderful place to travel solo. Respect local customs, use common sense, and you will likely leave with new friends and plans to come back.
