Longboarding in Imsouane: Why The Bay Is a Longboarder’s Dream

Long, slow, peeling walls that seem to go on forever: Imsouane’s Bay is one of the best longboard waves in Morocco. Discover why longboarders love it, the best conditions, nose-riding tips and how to share the wave in a busy line-up.

Some waves are made for shortboards: steep, fast and hollow. Others are made for gliding. The Bay in Imsouane belongs firmly in the second group. Its long, gentle right-hand walls have turned the village into one of Morocco’s favourite longboarding destinations. Here’s why, and how to make the most of it.

What makes The Bay perfect for longboarding?

  • Length: on good days the wave peels for hundreds of metres, giving you time to walk the board, trim and turn again and again.
  • Gentle shape: the wave is soft and slow rather than steep and hollow, ideal for a long board’s early entry and smooth glide.
  • Shelter: the bay is protected from the dominant wind, so the faces often stay clean.
  • Consistency: it works on a wide range of swells; see our surf season guide.

The best conditions

Longboarders usually love The Bay on small to medium swells with long periods, light wind and a mid tide. Bigger days get faster and more powerful, which suits shorter, more manoeuvrable boards and experienced surfers. Learn to read the numbers in how to read a surf forecast, and check our tide guide.

Longboard skills to practise on The Bay

  • Trimming: find the fastest part of the wave and glide along it.
  • Cross-stepping: walk towards the nose with one foot crossing over the other.
  • Nose riding: hang five (or ten!) when the wave’s shape lets the tail stay locked in.
  • Drop-knee turns: classic, stylish turns on a heavy board.
  • Stalling: slow down to stay in the pocket on longer sections.

A coaching session with video analysis is the fastest way to improve your footwork.

Which longboard?

For The Bay, a classic longboard of 9 feet or more works beautifully. Heavier, single-fin “logs” are great for nose riding on smaller days, while lighter performance longboards with a 2+1 fin setup are easier to turn. Surf shops in the village rent a range of boards, so try a few. More in our surfboard guide.

Longboard etiquette

Longboards catch waves earlier and more easily than shorter boards, so it’s easy to take more than your share. Be generous:

  • Don’t sit far outside the pack catching every set wave.
  • Let waves go to surfers who are better positioned.
  • Control your board. A loose 9-footer is dangerous in a crowd.
  • Paddle back out through the channel, not across the wave.

Best time of day

Early mornings often bring the cleanest, glassiest conditions and fewer surfers. Late afternoon glass-offs, when the wind drops before sunset, can also be magical, with golden light over the bay.

Not a longboarder yet?

Many surfers try a longboard for the first time in Imsouane and fall in love. If you’re coming from a soft-top, a longboard is a natural next step on The Bay’s gentle walls. Not sure where you stand? Take our surf level self-check.
