Surf Etiquette at The Bay: How to Share Imsouane’s Long Wave

The Bay is one of the longest waves in Morocco, and on good days you share it with many others. Here are the simple rules of surf etiquette, where beginners should sit, and the quietest times to catch your own waves.

The Bay in Imsouane is one of the longest waves in Morocco, and that is exactly why it can get busy. On a good day you will share it with beginners in lessons, longboarders, locals and travellers from all over the world. A few simple rules keep everyone safe and make sure everyone gets their share of waves. Here is how to surf The Bay with respect, and how to find quieter sessions.

Why etiquette matters on a long wave

On a short beach break, a mistake lasts a few seconds. On a wave that can run for hundreds of metres, one person dropping in or paddling into the wrong place can ruin a ride for several surfers at once, or cause a collision. Good etiquette keeps the line-up flowing.

The golden rules

  • One surfer, one wave. The surfer closest to the peak (where the wave starts breaking) has priority. If someone is already riding, don’t take off in front of them. This is called dropping in.
  • Don’t snake. Paddling around someone to get inside position and steal priority is bad form.
  • Paddle wide. When paddling back out, go around the breaking waves through the channel, not through the middle where people are riding.
  • Hold on to your board. Never throw your board away when a wave comes; on a busy wave it becomes a missile.
  • Wait your turn. Don’t catch every wave of the set. Share.
  • Apologise if you make a mistake. It happens to everyone; a quick sorry goes a long way.

Beginners: where to sit

If you are learning, stay in the inside section with your instructor, on the white water and smaller waves. Don’t paddle out to the main take-off zone until you can control your board and turn. Your instructor will choose a safe area away from the experienced surfers. Read more in what to expect from your first week.

Longboards and the line-up

Longboards catch waves earlier and more easily, which can make them dominate a line-up. If you ride a longboard, be extra generous: let waves go, and don’t sit far outside catching everything first.

When is The Bay less crowded?

  • Early morning: the first hour of light is usually the quietest, and often has the cleanest conditions too.
  • Lunchtime: many surf schools take a break in the middle of the day.
  • Outside holidays: avoid European school holidays, Christmas and New Year if you want space. Autumn is a great option; see our autumn guide.
  • Weekdays: weekends can bring more visitors from Agadir and Marrakech.

Respect the locals

Imsouane’s surfers and fishermen have lived with this wave all their lives. Be friendly, say hello in the water, and remember you are a guest. Respect also applies on land: take your rubbish with you, keep noise down and dress respectfully in the village. Our guide to local customs and etiquette covers the basics.

Safety first

  • Keep a safe distance from other surfers, especially beginners.
  • Know your level. If The Bay is big, stay on the inside or watch from the beach.
  • Use a leash, and check it before every session.

Share the stoke

Good manners in the water make The Bay more fun for everyone, you included. Follow these rules and you will be welcome in the line-up. Want to go beyond The Bay? Discover Cathedral Point.
