What to Pack for a Surf Trip to Imsouane: The Complete Checklist

Not sure what to bring to Imsouane? Our complete packing checklist covers surf gear, the right wetsuit, sun protection, clothes for the village, first aid, tech and documents, plus a few things to leave at home.

Packing for a surf trip to Morocco is easy once you know what the village has, and what it doesn’t. Imsouane is a small fishing village with a few shops, so it is worth bringing the essentials with you. Here is our complete checklist, from surf gear to medicine and evening layers.

Surf gear

  • Wetsuit: a 4/3 mm from December to April, a 3/2 mm from May to November. Check our month-by-month wetsuit guide. Lessons usually include one.
  • Board: bring your own if you surf regularly; rentals are easy to find in the village.
  • Board bag and fins, plus a spare leash.
  • Surf wax for the right water temperature (cool or cold water wax most of the year).
  • Booties if you feel the cold in winter, or to protect your feet on rocks.
  • Lycra or rash vest for summer sessions and sun protection.
  • Ding repair kit for small dents.

Sun protection

  • High-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen (ideally reef-safe)
  • Zinc stick for your face and nose
  • Sunglasses and a hat or cap
  • After-sun or aloe vera

The Moroccan sun is strong all year round, even when the air feels cool.

Clothes

  • Light clothing for the day: T-shirts, shorts, linen trousers.
  • Modest outfits for the village: cover shoulders and knees when you are away from the beach. See customs and etiquette.
  • Warm layers for evenings: a fleece or hoodie, and a light down jacket in winter.
  • Towel poncho for changing on the beach.
  • Flip-flops and trainers or sturdy sandals for hikes.
  • A light rain jacket in winter.

Health and first aid

  • Plasters, antiseptic and wound dressings for reef and fin cuts
  • Painkillers and anti-inflammatories
  • Rehydration salts and stomach medicine
  • Ear drops and earplugs for surfers
  • Any prescription medicine, in sufficient quantity
  • Travel insurance that covers surfing

Medical services in the village are basic; see our health guide.

Tech and documents

  • Passport and copies of your documents
  • Phone, chargers and a power bank
  • Waterproof phone pouch or dry bag
  • Unlocked phone for a local SIM; see internet in Imsouane
  • Cash in euros or dirhams; see money in Imsouane
  • Plug adapter (Morocco uses type C and E plugs, 220V)

Nice to have

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Head torch for walking at night
  • Yoga mat or stretching band
  • A good book for flat days
  • Snacks you can’t live without

What not to bring

  • Too many clothes; you’ll live in your wetsuit and shorts.
  • Expensive jewellery.
  • Drones without checking the rules: Morocco strictly controls them, and they may be confiscated at customs.
