Flying With a Surfboard to Morocco: Board Bags, Airline Fees and Transfers

Bringing your own board to Imsouane? Here’s how to choose and pack a board bag, what to check in your airline’s sports equipment policy, which airports to fly into and how to get your boards safely to the village.

There’s nothing like surfing your own board on a perfect wave, but getting it to Morocco in one piece takes some planning. Airline policies, board bags, padding and transfers all matter. Here’s a practical guide to travelling with a surfboard to Imsouane, and how to decide whether to bring one at all.

Should you bring your board or rent?

  • Bring your own if you surf regularly, know exactly what board you like and are staying a week or more.
  • Rent if you’re a beginner, travelling light, or want to try different shapes. Imsouane has plenty of rental options, from soft-tops to longboards. See our surfboard guide.

Which airport?

Agadir is the closest major airport to Imsouane, around 1.5–2 hours by road. Marrakech and Essaouira are other options, with longer transfers from Marrakech. See how to get to Imsouane for all routes.

Check your airline’s policy before booking

Every airline treats surfboards differently, and policies change. Before you buy your ticket, check:

  • Fees: some airlines charge a fixed sports equipment fee per flight, others count the board as checked luggage.
  • Size limits: longboards may exceed the maximum length some airlines accept.
  • Weight limits: including the bag and anything you pack inside it.
  • Number of boards: whether a bag with two or three boards counts as one item.
  • Pre-booking: most airlines want sports equipment booked in advance, and it’s usually cheaper online than at the airport.

Factor the board fee into the ticket price when comparing flights.

Choosing a board bag

  • Padded travel bag (at least 5–10 mm padding), not a thin day bag.
  • Right length: about 15–20 cm longer than your board.
  • Coffin bags fit several boards and your wetsuit, but watch the weight.
  • Wheels make long airport walks much easier.

How to pack your board

  • Remove the fins and pack them separately, with your fin key.
  • Protect the nose, tail and rails with pipe insulation foam, bubble wrap or your wetsuit and towels.
  • Remove wax or cover it, so it doesn’t melt onto everything.
  • Label the bag with your name, phone number and “Fragile”.
  • Take photos of your board before the flight, in case you need to claim for damage.

Getting your board to Imsouane

Book a transfer in advance and tell the driver you’re travelling with boards, so they bring a vehicle with a roof rack or enough space. Grand taxis and buses are possible but less convenient with big bags. Many accommodations can arrange a transfer for you.

If your board is damaged

Report it to the airline before leaving the airport and get a written damage report. Small dings can be fixed in Imsouane or Taghazout. Keep a ding repair kit in your bag; see our packing checklist.

Ready to fly

With the right bag, good packing and a pre-booked transfer, flying with a surfboard to Morocco is easy. Then all that’s left is to find the right wave: start with The Bay and explore the surf spots near Imsouane.
