How Long Does It Take to Learn to Surf in Imsouane?

Can you learn to surf in a week? It’s the question every beginner asks. Here’s an honest look at how long it takes to stand up, ride green waves and surf on your own in Imsouane, and what you can do to progress faster.

“How long until I can surf?” It’s the first question almost every beginner asks before booking a trip to Imsouane. The honest answer: you can stand up on your first day, but becoming an independent surfer takes months of regular practice. The good news is that Imsouane’s gentle bay is one of the best places in Morocco to speed that process up. Here is what to expect at each stage.

Stage 1: Standing up (days 1–3)

With a good instructor, a soft-top board and the slow white water of The Bay, most people stand up at least once in their very first lesson. Over the first few days you learn the pop-up, how to lie on the board, how to catch a wave in the white water and how to stay safe. Day by day, the details are in our guide to your first week of surfing.

Stage 2: Riding white water with confidence (week 1)

By the end of a first week, most beginners can catch white water waves on their own, stand up consistently and ride straight towards the beach, sometimes with a gentle turn. This is a huge achievement. Enjoy it!

Stage 3: Catching your first green waves (weeks 1–3)

Green waves are unbroken waves, the ones you ride along the face rather than straight to the beach. Some beginners catch their first one at the end of a first week in good conditions; for others it takes two or three weeks of surfing. Imsouane’s long, slow right-hander is ideal for this step because the wave gives you time to get to your feet and angle along it.

Stage 4: Surfing independently (months)

Being able to paddle out alone, choose your waves, respect priority and ride the face of the wave comfortably usually takes several months of regular surfing, or a few surf trips spread over a year or two. At this stage you can rent a board and surf The Bay without an instructor, and start thinking about coaching sessions to improve your turns.

Stage 5: Intermediate and beyond (years)

Generating speed, turning on the open face and surfing more powerful waves like Cathedral Point takes years. That’s the beauty of surfing: there is always something new to learn.

What makes you progress faster?

  • Time in the water. Surfing every day for a week beats one lesson a month for a year.
  • The right board. A big, stable soft-top makes catching waves much easier.
  • The right wave. Slow, gentle waves like The Bay let you practise more and fall less.
  • Good coaching. Small groups and video analysis help you fix mistakes early.
  • Fitness. Paddling fitness and flexibility make everything easier.
  • Rest. Tired muscles learn badly, so take a rest day mid-week.

Does age or fitness matter?

You can learn to surf at any age, and you don’t need to be an athlete. Being comfortable in the water and able to swim is what matters most. Fitter people often progress a little faster because they can paddle longer and stay in the water more.

How long should your Imsouane surf trip be?

  • Long weekend (3–4 days): a taste of surfing and your first stand-ups.
  • One week: the classic beginner trip; you leave able to ride white water confidently.
  • Two weeks or more: the best option to catch green waves and really feel progress.
