Imsouane With Kids: Is It a Family-Friendly Destination?

Gentle waves, a sandy bay and a slow pace of life make Imsouane a lovely choice for families. Discover surf lessons for kids, family-friendly places to stay, food for little ones and our safety tips for parents.

Imsouane is best known as a surf village, but it is also a lovely, low-key destination for families. Gentle waves, a sandy bay, fresh food and a slow pace of life make it easy to enjoy with children, as long as you know what to expect. Here is our guide to visiting Imsouane with kids.

Why families love Imsouane

  • Small and walkable: no busy roads through the centre and everything close together.
  • Gentle waves: The Bay has some of the softest waves in Morocco, ideal for kids learning to surf.
  • Sand and rock pools: endless entertainment at low tide.
  • Friendly locals: Moroccans are famously warm with children.

Surf lessons for children

Many surf schools in Imsouane teach children, usually from around 6–8 years old depending on the school and the child’s confidence in the water. Lessons for kids are shorter and take place in the shallow white water, with a high instructor ratio. Ask the school about minimum age, group size and whether parents can join. Summer, with smaller waves and warmer water, is the easiest season for young beginners; see our summer guide.

Where to stay with kids

Look for a guesthouse or apartment rather than a party-style surf house. Families appreciate a private bathroom, a terrace or rooftop for evenings, and a short walk to the beach. Some places offer family rooms or connected rooms. Read surf camp, surf house or hotel and where to stay in Imsouane.

Food for little ones

Moroccan food is generally family-friendly: grilled fish, chicken tagine, omelettes, fresh bread, fruit and fresh orange juice. Spices are aromatic rather than hot. Bring familiar snacks for fussy eaters, as the village has small shops rather than supermarkets. Find more ideas in what to eat in Imsouane.

Things to do with children

  • Watch the colourful fishing boats come back to the port.
  • Explore rock pools for crabs and small fish at low tide.
  • Take a family surf lesson or bodyboard in the white water.
  • Short, easy walks along the cliffs at sunset (hold hands near the edges).
  • A day trip to Paradise Valley’s natural pools or to Essaouira’s medina; see day trips.

Safety tips for parents

  • Sun protection: high-SPF sunscreen, hats and UV shirts. The sun is strong all year.
  • Water safety: there are generally no lifeguards; always supervise children in the water and stay in calm areas.
  • Cliffs and rocks: keep a close eye on kids near cliff edges and slippery rocks.
  • Medical kit: bring children’s medicines, plasters and rehydration salts. Medical services in the village are limited; see our health guide.
  • Stray cats and dogs: teach children not to touch them.

Getting there with kids

Agadir is the closest airport, about 1.5–2 hours away by car. Book a private transfer and ask for child seats in advance, as they are not standard in Morocco. See how to get to Imsouane.

Best time for a family trip

Late spring, summer and early autumn offer warmer water, smaller waves and longer days, which is perfect for families. In winter, the waves are bigger and the water colder, better suited to experienced surfers. Compare seasons in our best time to visit guide.

A family adventure by the ocean

Imsouane offers families something rare: a real Moroccan village experience, safe gentle waves and plenty of time together. Pack the sunscreen and the buckets, and get ready for a memorable trip.
