What’s My Surf Level? A Self-Check and the Right Imsouane Wave for You

Beginner, improver, intermediate or advanced? Knowing your real surf level helps you book the right lessons and pick the right wave. Use our simple self-check to find your level, and discover which Imsouane spot suits you best.

When you book surf lessons, guiding or a surf package, you will almost always be asked: “What’s your level?” Many people over- or underestimate themselves, and end up bored in the white water or scared on waves that are too big. This simple self-check helps you find your real level and choose the right wave in Imsouane.

Level 1: Complete beginner

You have never surfed, or only tried once or twice.

  • You can’t yet stand up reliably on a board.
  • You don’t know how to catch a wave on your own.
  • You aren’t sure how waves, currents and tides work.

Where to surf in Imsouane: the inside of The Bay, in the white water, always with an instructor. Read what to expect from your first week.

Level 2: Beginner-improver

  • You stand up on most white water waves.
  • You can catch white water waves on your own.
  • You ride straight to the beach, maybe with a small turn.
  • You are not yet comfortable paddling out past the breaking waves.

Where to surf: The Bay’s inside and middle sections, with lessons or supervised sessions, on a soft-top or a big, stable board.

Level 3: Intermediate (green waves)

  • You can paddle out on your own and get through the white water.
  • You catch unbroken green waves and ride along the face, left or right.
  • You understand priority and surf etiquette.
  • You can choose a wave and position yourself in the line-up.

Where to surf: the main take-off zone of The Bay, especially on longer boards. Guiding and coaching help you take the next step. Learn the rules in our surf etiquette guide.

Level 4: Advanced intermediate

  • You generate speed by pumping along the wave.
  • You do bottom turns and cutbacks with control.
  • You are comfortable in head-high waves and stronger currents.
  • You can duck dive or turtle roll efficiently.

Where to surf: The Bay on bigger days, and Cathedral Point when conditions are right.

Level 5: Advanced

  • You surf powerful waves and bigger swells with confidence.
  • You read the ocean well: currents, sets, tides and sandbanks.
  • You can surf a variety of breaks and boards.

Where to surf: Cathedral Point on its best days, plus the other spots along the coast on a surf road trip; see our road trip guide.

Common mistakes when rating yourself

  • Counting years, not sessions. Ten surf holidays of one week is not ten years of surfing.
  • Judging by the best wave you ever caught. Rate your average session, not your highlight.
  • Underestimating yourself. If you can paddle out and ride green waves, you’re an intermediate. Enjoy it!

Why your level matters when booking

Your level decides which group you join, which board you use and which wave you surf. Being honest means safer sessions, more waves and faster progress. If you’re unsure, tell your instructor in the first session. They’ll quickly see where you are.
