Imsouane and Sidi Kaouki are two of the most laid-back surf spots on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, but their waves and wind are very different. Here is how they compare for surfing, kitesurfing, atmosphere and beginners.
If you are looking for a quiet surf spot on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, away from the bigger resorts, two names come up again and again: Imsouane and Sidi Kaouki. Both are small, relaxed and surrounded by wild nature, but the waves and the atmosphere are quite different. Here is how they compare.
Sidi Kaouki is a small beach village about 25 kilometres south of Essaouira, known for its long sandy beach and its white marabout (shrine). Imsouane lies further south, roughly halfway between Essaouira and Agadir, on a headland with two bays. The drive between them takes around 1.5 hours.
Imsouane is famous for The Bay, a long, sheltered right-hand point break with slow, peeling waves, ideal for beginners and longboarders. On the other side of the village, Cathedral Point offers a more powerful wave for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Sidi Kaouki is mainly a beach break: a long, open beach with several peaks that move with the sandbanks. It picks up plenty of swell and suits intermediate surfers on the right day, but it is more exposed to wind and currents, and less forgiving for complete beginners.
This is the big difference. Sidi Kaouki is close to Essaouira, the windiest part of the coast, and is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers, especially in spring and summer. Imsouane’s bay is better protected from the dominant north wind, so it often stays surfable when other spots are blown out.
Both villages are calm. Sidi Kaouki is very small and spread out along the beach, with a handful of guesthouses and cafés, and camel and horse rides on the sand. Imsouane has a bit more life thanks to its active fishing port, surf schools and cafés overlooking the bay. Read must-see places in Imsouane.
For beginners, Imsouane is the stronger choice: gentle waves, many surf schools and a long ride that helps you progress quickly. See learning to surf in Imsouane.
Imsouane has more restaurants, cafés and small shops, as well as fresh fish from the port every day. Sidi Kaouki has fewer options, and many visitors go to Essaouira for supplies. See what to eat in Imsouane.
With a car, you can easily combine them: a day in Sidi Kaouki on the way from Essaouira, then several days in Imsouane. Follow our Morocco surf road trip, and read our other comparisons: Imsouane vs Taghazout and Imsouane vs Essaouira.
