Vanlife in Imsouane: A Guide for Campervan and Motorhome Travellers

Travelling the Moroccan coast by campervan or motorhome? Find out what to know about overnight parking, water, waste and services in Imsouane, how to drive there safely and how to be a respectful guest in the village.

Morocco’s Atlantic coast has long been a favourite winter destination for campervans and motorhomes, and Imsouane, with its long waves and spectacular cliffs, is a natural stop on any coastal road trip. Before you set off, it helps to know how things work today, because rules for overnight parking and camping along the coast have tightened in recent years.

Can you stay overnight in a van in Imsouane?

Wild camping along the Moroccan coast is far more restricted than it used to be. Local authorities regularly move on vehicles parked overnight in places not intended for camping, and rules can change from one season to the next. Our advice is simple:

  • Use official campsites or guarded parking areas where they exist.
  • Ask locally: your surf school, a cafĂ© owner or the guardian (gardien) of a parking area will know the current situation.
  • Follow instructions from the authorities politely if you are asked to move.
  • Consider a mix: park the van in a secure spot and book a room for a few nights in the village to enjoy a hot shower and a proper bed.

Parking and guardians

In many Moroccan towns and beaches you will find a gardien, often in a reflective vest, who watches over parked vehicles for a small tip. It is a normal and useful system. Agree on the price in advance if you are staying overnight.

Water, waste and services

  • Water: fill your tanks at campsites or in larger towns such as Tamanar, Essaouira or Agadir.
  • Waste water and toilets: empty only at proper facilities. Never on the beach or in nature.
  • Rubbish: take it with you to proper bins. The coast is beautiful; let’s keep it that way.
  • Gas and fuel: fill up in larger towns; there are few petrol stations on the coastal road.
  • Groceries: the village has small shops; do big shops in town.

Driving to Imsouane

The village is reached by a winding coastal road from the N1. Roads are generally fine but narrow in places, with steep sections near the village. Drive slowly, watch for animals, cyclists and trucks, and avoid driving at night. Imsouane fits perfectly into our Morocco surf road trip from Essaouira to Agadir. See also how to get to Imsouane.

Surfing from your van

Being on the road lets you chase the swell along the coast. In Imsouane, The Bay suits longboarders and improvers, while Cathedral Point offers more power. Check our tide guide to time your sessions.

Respect the village

Imsouane is a small fishing community, not a campsite. Keep noise down, don’t hang laundry on public property, dress respectfully in the village and support local businesses: eat in local restaurants, take lessons with local schools, buy fish at the port. More in customs and etiquette.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash; ATMs are limited. See money in Imsouane.
  • Get a local SIM for maps and updates; see internet in Imsouane.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and lock the van when you surf.
  • Check your insurance covers Morocco (green card) before you arrive.

Van plus room: the best of both

Many van travellers end up loving Imsouane so much that they stay longer. Combining a secure parking spot with a few nights in a guesthouse gives you comfort, a hot shower and peace of mind. Browse our accommodations to find a base in the village.
