The Bay and Cathedral Point keep most surfers in Imsouane happy for weeks. But the coastline between Essaouira and Agadir is full of other waves, and with a car or a surf guide you can explore them on a day trip. Here are the main spots within reach, and when they’re worth the drive.
North of Imsouane, the small fishing village of Tafedna has a beach and point set in a wild, quiet bay. It’s known for its peaceful atmosphere and can offer good waves for intermediate surfers when the swell and wind line up. It’s a great escape when you want a calmer session and a simple fish lunch by the sea.
Heading south towards Agadir, you’ll pass Tamri, known for its banana plantations, its river mouth and a long, open beach break. Tamri is often described as a swell magnet: it picks up more swell than most spots in the area, so it can have waves when other places are flat. It can be powerful and exposed to wind, and suits intermediate and advanced surfers best.
Further south, around Cap Ghir, the coastline becomes more rugged, with reef and point breaks that work on bigger swells. Boilers, named after an old ship’s boiler visible on the reef, is the best known. These are experienced-surfer waves: rocky, powerful and best surfed with someone who knows them.
About 1.5 hours south, Taghazout and Tamraght have a long chain of famous point and beach breaks for every level, with plenty of surf shops and cafés. It’s a classic day trip or a stop on our surf road trip. Compare the two towns in Imsouane vs Taghazout.
North towards Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki offers a long beach break with several peaks, and it’s popular with kitesurfers on windy days. Read our comparison Imsouane vs Sidi Kaouki.
After a day exploring the coast, there’s nothing like coming back to Imsouane for sunset over the bay and a grilled-fish dinner. Make Imsouane your base and explore the whole coastline from there.
